Ikea/O+S Toddler Back Pack

"He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young." Isaiah 40:11
It was a good thing I had already embroidered "Hurdle" on this toddler back pack, because otherwise my friend, Kitty, would NOT have had a shower gift!!! I'm not kidding... I had a hard time letting it go! This is my little labor of love for a sweet friend that is currently adopting, like us, through DSS here in SC!

Our friends, Anne (of Hello Newman's), Ashley, and Laurin threw Kitty the cutest "Storybook Themed Baby Shower" while she is currently almost "paper pregnant"! It was to die for adorable, as everyone brought books to start their future little one's library! It's definitely the cutest library book shower I have ever been to! Take a look!
The hosts had a yellow and light grey color scheme, which beautifully coordinated with Anne's dining room, adorable paper straws in ball jars, and precious bunting and alphabet banners! They even had thought of book tags that said "This book was given in love by ________" to insert into each children's book cover! Like I said, adorable! I have the most talented and creative friends on the planet. I promise you. They could run pinterest!

With the Storybook theme and not knowing the age or sex of the future little ones, I knew I wanted to do a "Book bag" for them and also use more of my Ikea sewing stash! I couldn't be happier with the results! Neither could Kitty, so it made letting it go that much easier!
I forgot to change my ISO, so these of Kitty are kind of blurry! Hate when that happens!
I'm thankful she loved it!

The pattern is from the Oliver + S Little Things to Sew book that I got over Christmas from Hart and the fabric is Evalena from Ikea that they so graciously sent me! This book bag was all about fabric placement. I had the hardest time settling on which area of the fabric to cut out due to the size of the design, but finally loved that these two friends came down to meet each other and it just so happened to have the perfect spot to embroider "Hurdle".
While grabbing a zipper at the fabric store, I forgot that I needed the metal strap adjusters, so when I realized that I didn't have them I had to get creative, hence the button straps. I used a black canvas for the straps and the buttons were from my Nana's button stash. I added a total of 8 button holes in the straps that she can let out as they grow or if Joel, her husband, needs to carry this thing around, he will have some shoulder room... haha!
I loved that the inside had a pocket, but being a practical mom, I love having a side pocket to stick a sippy cup, so I added one for Kitty. She's glad we already know these things... just wait my friend your learning curve is about to go STRAIGHT UP!
Of course, I had to stash the inside pockets with a few books. The lining is just black cotton and some black canvas to make it a tad more sturdy.
I really didn't play with changing the pattern very much, besides the side pocker, because I am kind of funny about doing patterns EXACTLY like they say the first time around, so that I can kind of learn the ropes, but this is already back on my project list so that I can make Cai one and I have plenty of modifications in mind!
I'm so excited to see what God has in store for our families! Love you sweet Kitty!
